University of Aruba Celebrates 35 Years of Excellence and a Promising New Academic Year

On a radiant morning of Friday, September 8th, 2023, the University of Aruba marked its 35th anniversary and ushered in a new academic year. The ceremony was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including His Excellency the Governor of Aruba, Mr. Alfonso Boekhoudt, Prime Minister Mr. Evelyn Croes-Wever, Minister of Education Eddy Croes, and distinguished ministers, alongside students, faculty, and honored guests, including Rectors from the University of St. Maarten and the University of Curaçao.

In a heartfelt address, the University’s Rector, Mrs. Viola Heutger highlighted the institution’ s remarkable journey, characterized by substantial growth in student and Ph.D. enrollment, faculty expansion, and innovative programs like the Academic Foundation Year. The University’s global, regional, and local network has significantly impacted society, fostering a community dedicated to education, research, and progress. Former Rector Lydia Emerencia and former Rector Glenn Thode were warmly acknowledged for their contributions to the University’;s development.

Key accomplishments from the prior academic year included a positive recommendation from the Dutch Flemming Accreditation body for the Organization, Governance, and Management (OGM) bachelor program. The University also introduced new master’s programs in Governance and Leadership, and Sustainable Island Solutions, reinforcing its commitment to academic excellence. The initiation of the Kingdom Mobility Program, enabling students to study abroad, further enhances educational opportunities within the Kingdom and beyond.

Looking ahead, the University aims to expand its global network, develop new educational programs, and address space constraints to accommodate its growing community.

The University of Aruba dedication to serving the Aruban society extends beyond language barriers, encompassing Papiamento, Dutch, and Spanish, reflecting its commitment to diverse and inclusive education.

Contribution of the alumnus:

Following the opening speeches, four distinguished alumni shared their inspiring journeys. Mr. Jurney Tromp, a successful lawyer, and Nicolas Gordon, a thriving business owner originally from Jamaica, emphasized the impact of their University experience. Marisol, a communication manager at the Aruba Tourism Authority and a guest lecturer at the University highlighted the importance of tourism education. Tyson Lopez, CEO of Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba, showcased the University  role in shaping leaders dedicated to sustainability, diversity, and civic engagement.

The alumni expressed deep gratitude to the University for preparing them for leadership roles. President of the board of trustees, Mr. Juri Nicolaas, presented the book “ Sagrado Secular” to commemorate the occasion. Following the inspiring speeches, guests were invited to the library's exhibition, offering a glimpse into the University  35-year literary journey. The University expressed gratitude to the Aruban, business, and international communities for their continuous support and collaboration. The University expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Aruba for unwavering support.
