Today, St Maarten commemorate 375 years of the Treaty of Concordia

Today, I stand before you with my brother from the North. The two of us, afro descendants of the island, whose families have rich generational ties in this very soil, tasked with running our country in the favor and voice of the people of St. Martin. Working tirelessly to ensure our bond and communication remains strong, for, as the proverb goes, when brothers fight to the death, a stranger inherits their father’s estate.

This land is our land. Our home. A place for us to pass on to our future generations. Our children should inherit the bounties that are inherently theirs, be they Soualigan by birth, or by choice. This can only be achieved through the cooperation and integration of both sides of the island. We must reject the idea that our borders create dissection, and treat them as suggestions, or guidelines, but never as seeds of division.” —Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs
