In the early hours of this morning there were persistent rumors that Gerlien Croes had retired from AVP. This is apparently based on a message he sent to his companions that was eventually circulated.
It was difficult to reach Croes for a comment, as he did not answer messages to his cell phone. However, later in the day the confirmation came that this candidate withdrew his support from the AVP party. He made this announcement in a brief statement before Parliament.
In his statement he said that as promised to the people today he announces his decision on his political future, after asking the people for time. It took three weeks, but I spent a lot of time talking to family and supporters. It’s difficult to reach each other, he said. The decision came exactly six years after he entered politics. He called for drastic changes to come up with a new thinking in the party. There is a huge division in the party in terms of topical views and policies. Lately I wasn’t convinced that drastic changes were coming in the short term and I had to make a decision. Aruba is going through difficult situations, challenges with the Netherlands.
He said he could not adhere to his principles. I would like to thank everyone who has taken part in the deliberations of the last three weeks. I am convinced that people still believe in fresh air. The party I belonged to gave young people prominent positions. But this is not enough, because there must be a change in the content. And I didn’t feel any change in him.
He said all this before confirming that he was retiring from the AVP.
In the last election Gerlien Croes managed to get over 2,000 votes, in her second appearance on the AVP list.
Recently retired candidates from the AVP were Rycond Santos do Nascimento, and later Muzaninn Wever, son of the late politician Mary Wever.
