Now that the 2023 supplementary budget has been approved in Aruba’s Parliament, it is possible to focus on the next steps to end the year on a firm footing. At the OV #26 public meeting in the Parliament of Aruba, Minister Geoffrey Wever informed of the various plans in final preparation for San Nicolas. It also managed to secure 500 thousand Florins to start a soft development by the end of this year already.

The vision is to increase the flow of people into the city. In Oranjestad there are ongoing projects such as in Columbusstraat, and others ongoing or in preparation such as Huize Veneranda, Freezone, CBS, Aruba Fair Trade Authority that follow the same vision and strategy to create flow of people. There is also the possibility of housing for students. Also touched upon was the issue of security, for which Minister Wever mentioned being pleased with the inter-ministerial collaboration with Ministers Tjong, Oduber, Arends and his staff, to raise security in the downtown area, which supports the overall vision.

The City of San Nicolas has been talking to various stakeholders to develop a project that could have an immediate impact on downtown, while also serving as a first step in a larger plan to revitalize the entire downtown area in the long term.

After several surveys and consultations, a design based on a concept was created, which was approved by the various stakeholders involved. This includes the expansion of public spaces, public facilities, accessibility and parking, as well as the development of artistic and musical industries.

Minister Wever indicated that 500 thousand Florins will be allocated this year (2023) for the “soft development” of the project, which will soon be announced.
