Saturday morning the Minister of Tourism and Public Health Mr. Dangui Oduber made openings of the Cardiology symposium. A very important symposium where they explained how percutane coronaire intervention “PCI” has become a reality in Aruba since 2018 and how many patients have been treated using this technology.
PCI is the general name for treating narrowed coronary arteries using tools over the point of a catheter. The introduction of PCI procedures in Aruba had a substantial impact on our healthcare system. Minister Oduber is proud to say that this development has and is giving our locals access to the best coronary care out there. Minister Oduber continued by saying that before the year 2018 many are the ones who had to go to Colombia to seek their health when it comes to the ICP. Now that all this is performed in Aruba itself, the patient no longer has to go abroad, he remains closer to his family.
The patient feels more comfortable that helps a lot in the recovery process. Also the local PCI has helped to mitigate the growth of the AZV expenses in relation to the growth in need of this type of treatment caused by, among other things, the aging of our people. From the beginning, the Ministry of public health supported Dr. Lacle’s vision to create a PCI center. The partnership with Amsterdam umc and ‘onze lieve Vrouwe gasthuis’ (olvg) was undoubtedly very important to realize this vision. Thanks to this center, many lives were safed with the ICP that could be done here in Aruba itself.
