The jury praises the Curaçao opera singer for the way in which she has made opera attractive to a large audience. The jury unanimously chose Tania Kross as the winner. She is praised for her “leading international singing career and the innovative way in which she makes opera widely accessible and appeals to, connects and inspires a diverse audience.”
Tania Kross impressed
“I’m reminded of little Tania, 6 years old, in Curaçao with a recorder, who for the first time realized how to play notes,” says Kross in the announcement. “I am incredibly grateful for this beautiful award.”
Kross has now been in the business for 25 years. She is a star who attracts packed houses at home and abroad. At the age of seventeen, she sang the Papiamento song ‘Plegaria’ for the first time in front of a jury, after which she was told that she could study at the conservatory. “They said to me: You can’t sing, but you are a singer.”
Kross has several honorary titles to her name, such as the Edison Audience Award. She is the first person to create an opera in Papiamento: Katibu di Shon, after the book by Cola Debrot.
Meanwhile, Tania Kross has also been nominated for the ‘Woman of the Year Award’ from Harper’s Bazaar.knipselkrant-curacao.com
