The Dutch navy ship Zr.Ms. Groningen and the Coast Guard Caribbean Region intercepted a drug transport on Thursday morning where over 600 kilograms of cocaine was seized.
The suspicious vessel was detected by the MariAem OperaAe Centrum (MOC). Ms. Groningen and the Dash-8 aircraft of the Coast Guard were immediately switched on to intercept the vessel. With the help of the two fast FRISC boats of the Groningen, the Dutch navy ship managed to overtake the suspected vessel and the so-called go-fast was forced to stop.
When the FRISC boats were nearby, the suspects began throwing parcels overboard. After a long chase, with stop signals and warning shots, the suspect vessel’s engines were eventually turned off.
In collaboration with the Dash-8, twinAg pakkeQen were fished out of the water and the five suspects, four of whom were Venezuelans and a Colombian, were arrested. Together with the packages, they were transferred to the Korps PoliAe Caribbean Netherlands in Bonaire, where the packages of narcotics were immediately seized.
Last week, the state ship also intercepted two drug boats. During those interceptions, Mrs. Groningen seized almost 2,000 kilograms of narcotics.
Around 5 p.m., the Coast Guard brought in the boat Bonaire with the amount of drugs and also five suspects. Dutch Caribbean Police took over the drugs and arrested the suspects. Investigation into the case is ongoing.
