Statia is one step closer to the return to full democracy with the approval of a Royal Decree by the Council of Ministers in the Netherlands terminating the St Eustatius Recovery Provisions Act.
The decree, which was proposed by State Secretary Alexandra van Huffellen, will now go before the first and second chambers for approval.
Parliament have until Wednesday 6 March to approve the decree, after which King Willem-Alexander will sign the proclamation.
Statia has now met the necessary requirements for the island to move to the next stage of the journey to full democracy. This stage consists of the adoption of the Royal Decree and the appointment of a governor.
With the approval of the decree, the kingdom representative will additional powers until the expiration of the act on 1 September 2024.
