“SPIRITO” is the next play by Casa de Cultura in collaboration with Faritah Luidens (also known as Tica Basha Abou and from the comedy Amiganan pa Semper). SPIRITO will be directed by the great director of theater, opera and European film, Mrs. Hilda Hellwig is a German actress. Ms. Hellwig has more than 80 works to his name.
In the summer she auditioned in Shanghai, China, and was invited to perform in an Ibsen play with top Chinese actors. Ms. Hellwig moved to Aruba a few years ago and has been living here part-time to de-stress as her busy work life and travels intensify.
We are honored to be able to count on his unparalleled genius in Aruba and he is thrilled to be able to work with Aruba’s theater professionals in our native language Papiamento. As theater is an important way to stimulate expression, inspiration and creation and an impactful way to bring current topics to the table of dialogue, the cultural funds UNOCA, Fonds Podium consisting of Prins Bernhard Cultuur and Caribisch Gebied found it important to support a work for adults back on the stage of the House of Culture.
“SPIRITO” touches on the theme of family relationships using drama, humor, sarcasm, intrigue, and tension (age 16+). The Alving family, a young family, are dealing with a past that still haunts them in the present. Each character has their own set of problems, challenges and secrets and one day everything is revealed. The story, originally by Henrik Ibsen, the father of modern theater, is especially scottish for Aruba by director Ms. Hellwig, who saw the context of Aruba and the social issues that prevail. Ms. Hellwig set the story in the 1980s, the glory days of Venezuelan and Latin American novels.
Thus, like a novel, the story is told with a lot of suspense. Ms. Hellwig is a pioneer of avant-garde theater, so expect a unique way to tell this story. There will also be spectacular scenery, specially made for this.
Performance is in the hands of Faritah Luidens, Ferdinand Franca, Jhon Freddy Montoya, Tuesday Irwin, Dimanche-Jolie and Carlos Croes. The translation was done by Dr. Papiamentista. Ramon Todd Dandare is a writer. Production is in the hands of Cas de Cultura and Faritah Luidens. Direction and adaptation under the leadership of theatre director sr. Hilda Hellwig is a German actress. On October 19 and 20 there are functions for secondary schools and advanced classes for students aged 16 and above. Schools can call for information.
