Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes: Government of Aruba continues negotiations with Netherlands to find best solution for Aruba

Gobierno Di Aruba Ta Sigui Den Negociacion Cu Hulanda Pa Yega Na Miho Solucion Pa Aruba

Following the public meeting in Parliament last tuesday to discuss the issue of refinancing, the Government of Aruba continued to be in contact with the Netherlands to continue at the negotiating table. Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes has indicated that the debt of the Dutch loan during the pandemic will mature on October 10. The total debt is 916 million florins. Either the debt must be repaid or it must be refinanced. Aruba does not have the money to pay this debt and therefore needs to refinance.

The Prime Minister indicated that Aruba would be able to obtain refinancing on the international market and/or in the Netherlands at market interest rates but the Netherlands is also willing to provide lower interest rates. This, the Prime Minister indicated that the Government is in negotiations with the Netherlands on it and they want to achieve it also because this deal will save Aruba at least 30 million florins per year.

Aruba’s premier stressed that after the debate in Parliament last Tuesday, the meetings with Secretary of State Alexandra Van Huffelen continued and were going in the right direction. “We are seeing an opening, albeit not large, but the government is trying to come up with the best terms for Aruba”, the Prime Minister emphasized.

Positively, the Prime Minister indicated, Van Huffelen has already indicated that he would be willing to extend the debt repayment period. What the Government of Aruba is trying to achieve is to achieve lower interest rates to pay off the debt without it being a burden on the budget of Aruba. The meetings are going well. We are at the negotiating table, although it is not always easy, but always with respect for each other. For the Wever-Croes Cabinet, the general interest of the country of Aruba comes first, Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes said.
