Rousanne de Weever is the new president of Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba (SMFA), currently only a few weeks into her term, and is extremely excited about this new challenge. When she saw the opportunity to apply, she did so because she loves monuments and also lived for many years in Curaçao where monuments are very important to the identity of the country and this certainly fills her heart. In his life he shared moments of the houses of slavery, even seeing the lessons that were given under this architecture that brings another environment of life.
In Aruba, too, there are beautifully restored old-style houses. Thus with the passion and love that there is for monuments and houses their ancient history. Rousanne de Weever wanted to do her part to contribute to the conservation of as many of Aruba’s monuments as possible, but also as a young person who wanted to give back to the community of Aruba.
The aim is to increase community awareness and education on the importance of monuments so that the community itself can play an active role in this regard. It’s important to know that monuments should not only be in the sense that they are being renovated, but that it’s also sustainable where people can use them and rent them and create beautiful and authentic places that are ours.
Rousanne de Weever is overjoyed at her arrival and is warmly welcomed and at the same time already active and has been given a new monument that is now the algemenerekenkamer, but was a school before 1888. According to the President of Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba Rousanne de Weever it is very nice to experience and see the change of the building where it is a place where before the children had school for the first time. It’s wonderful to hear the history and to see the changes that have taken place.
Rousanne de Weever has also worked in the tourism sector for almost 6 years and sees that tourists come to Aruba because they want to experience Aruba and often express that they want a restaurant to serve them something local and that is sorely lacking in Aruba. The same situation occurs with monuments where the tourist seeks the Aruban feeling in the country and where there is authentic food and where they can say that while they are in Aruba they have enjoyed the culture of Aruba. It is believed that it is very important for Aruba to emphasize this part because a tourist does not come to Aruba to come as a fast food that they already have in their place. We need to be able to create our own identity and let the tourist experience a unique experience of what our culture and food is like here. We should all be proud of our identity.
