A very fruitful week is behind the scenes in which in New York the meetings took place The General Assembly of the United Nations #UNGA78. Different leaders from different countries met to among others together see how to improve our world. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) are central points around which the various meetings took place.
Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes during the Press Conference of the Government of Aruba Monday morning, more of his participation during the 3 days at the United Nations was elaborated on where he attended 28 different bilateral conferences, high-level events, and meetings on various topics, such as human rights and issues to empower women, adaptations of climate and infrastructure, energy and poverty. The Prime Minister, along with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte and the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten Silveira Jacobs, also met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Antonio Guterres.
The prime minister remarked that even during this meeting, Aruba is getting a lot of praise for having guided the Water Conference held in Aruba last March. This is an event organized by the Netherlands and host and Prime Minister the honor to lead it. On the part of Aruba, during the meeting with Mr. Guterres, the Prime Minister elaborated on the needs that, as a small island, Aruba has. SIDS countries, Small Islands Development States, have several needs compared to large countries. The Prime Minister asked for attention for the large debts due to the Covid pandemic that our SIDS countries, including Aruba, have.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations is a promoter of the Debt To Grant Swap project. This it ensures that countries with pandemic debts get some kind of waiver and can use it
money to invest to make the country more resilient. This, the prime minister stressed, is a project that the Huelva government always maintains. The Prime Minister requested to continue to place attention and emphasis on it. Secretary General Guterres informed the premiers of the Kingdom that recently, Portugal implemented it in Cape Verde and this was also highlighted by the Prime Minister of Cape Verde in another meeting. The Prime Minister, on behalf of the Government of Aruba, together with the United Nations committed to continue working on it for Aruba as well.
