Ministry of Justice Curaçao changes permit policy to attract more investors

Justice Minister Mr. Shalten Hato, besides keeping a close eye on the public order, also takes into account the rules and conditions that foreigners who wish to establish themselves here on Curaçao must comply with.

For our economy to continue to grow, it is important for our country to attract more people to invest in our country and thus contribute to economic growth. Local or international investors are more than welcome.

But for the foreign investor, it is important that the process and the conditions to which it must comply are simplified. Every foreigner who wishes to visit our country can stay a maximum of 30 days (depending on the nationality of the person can stay up to 90 days). If the foreigner wishes to extend his/her stay, he/she can do so by submitting a petition (toeristisch verlenging) to the Admission Service, which falls under the responsibility of the Minister of Justice, mr. Shut up.

Currently the Ministry of Justice has a permit policy for foreign investors that stipulates under which special conditions a foreign investor can apply for a residence permit. One of the current conditions is that the foreign investor must invest a minimum amount of half a million florins. In addition, the investor must demonstrate that he has the capital to cover the costs of (maintenance of) his investment as well as his own living expenses.

The current policy of the Minister of Justice stipulates that an investor who invests an amount of half a million florins will receive a residence permit for a term of three (3) years, an investment of NAF 750.000,00 gives the investor the right to receive a residence permit for a period of five (5) years. When the period for which the investor received his residence permit expires, he can extend it for the same period as mentioned above.

The new policy will lower the requirement of the amount of investment that the foreign investor must meet in order to apply for an investment permit. An investment of an amount of NAF 250.000,00 gives the foreign investor the possibility to apply for an investor permit for a term of three (3) years. The foreign investor who invests an amount of NAF 500,000.00 in a business or house will be considered for a five (5) year investor permit.

Another possibility that this new policy will provide is a permit for an indefinite period when the foreign investor invests a minimum amount of NAF 1,000,000.00 in a home or business. The investor can even apply for a permit for his family members who know that his person wishes to come and establish themselves in our country. He should take care of his wife and children. With this policy change, the Ministry of Justice sends a clear signal that investors from around the world are more than welcome to our island.

This policy brings various benefits to our country, since investing in a company creates more jobs, investing in a house ensures that more money is brought into the government’s coffers because this transaction is obliged to pay various types of taxes such as overdrachtsbelasting, honroerend goedbelasting and generates foreign exchange for our country.

Finally, on the instruction of Minister Hato, the development or revision of the chapters of the entry and expulsion policy aimed at attracting more investors or persons with capital and living interest (renteniers) began.
