Mangrove forests play a fundamental role for humans and nature

Manager Giancarlo

Many people may not realize the value that mangroves have for us as humans and nature. According to Research and Conservation Manager Giancarlo Nunes mangroves have several functions that are important to us as humans, one of them is that they protect our coasts, before mangroves were on all sides and they protect the island from bad weather when it is hurricane season and the tide is rough enough to break the coast, but the mangroves protect the coast and prevent the hurricanes and the rough tide from breaking our coast.

The mangroves’ job is to withstand the impact of hurricanes and rough seas, and they serve as temples to protect our shores. Another aspect is that the mangroves are the best trees for cleaning the air, we are not aware that we have a lot of pollution in the air. The mangroves filter the air very well to remove CO2 from the system. Another function of mangroves is that they are the nesting grounds for the fish, where the small fish live under the roots of the mangroves to protect them from the larger fish and give them a chance to grow into adults and then go to the reef.

The mangroves also filter water, not only the air pollution they filter but also the pollution in the water.

Currently, the Aruba National Park Foundation (FPNA) is preparing the entire process and hopes that in June the necessary works can begin to be carried out and by July there will be results that can begin to tell how everything is going. However, the project itself is for a full year where it starts with a survey to see how the system will change after the changes of the entire process have taken place.

The Aruba National Park Foundation (FPNA) is very pleased that in Aruba there is currently a great interest in nature protection and that it helps our nature, but there is also more awareness and more interest in protecting our nature so that Aruba can have a healthier nature. It is said that the spirit is high and they want to help Aruba have a better nature. This project is funded by the European Union and makes it possible to carry out research and action.
