The symposium entitled “parental taxation for homework and schoolwork in Curacao: implications, suggestions and legal framework” was held at the University of Curacao Dr. Moisés da Costa Gómez (UoC) to a full auditorium
The symposium was born from the collaboration between the Educational Fair of Chance Foundation (FFEC) and the UoC.
The symposium was officially opened by the Magnificent Rector of the UoC, Dr. Francis De Lanoy. Among other things, he highlighted the importance of joining forces/establishing alliances in the interests of Curacao and the social role of the UoC.
Later, Mrs. Susan Larmonie, Secretary General of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, shared her vision. In addition, he encouraged the participants to start a dialogue to come up with a viable solution together for both parents and school-age children.
The first guest of the symposium was Dr. Odette van Brummen-Girigori (ffec-UoC). He presented the results of the study with recommendations and possible implications. He also emphasized the maturation of the brain and the process of information processing, which is important for learning and continuing to remember (retain) the offered learning material.
Raily Goedgedrag (policy consultant, trainer and education inspector), focused on law and regulation. Among other activities, it pays attention to the national ordinances on basic education, regulation of vacation days, educational use, development-oriented education and school homework policies. At the end of his presentation, he also gave his vision of how far the task is necessary or not.
After the interruption, MCB gift cards worth ANG 50 that FFEC had made available were awarded to the winners present. In the last part, the participants could ask questions and exchange ideas with the panel of Dr. Francis De Lanoy, Dr. Odette van Brummen-Girigori, Wladimir kleinmoedig, BSc and the doctors Raily Goedgedrag. The organizers recall a very successful symposium and will continue to make an effort to achieve a change in cooperation with all relevant actors.
