Former Minister Otmar Oduber: Claim millionaire threatens Aruba for lack of accountability

Ex Minister Otmar Oduber

Parliament is asleep while a million-dollar project is in jeopardy in San Nicolas. All governments have promised development for San Nicolas, till today that development is not seeing action. This was announced by the former Minister of Tourism and Infrastructure.

Secrets Hotel is in the public eye as there is a case that has been filed against the project and in this case even more against the government of Aruba. This project and its consequences have an enormous impact on our island.

There is a great lack of non-critical members of parliament, but also of other politicians who are not active to ask and inform themselves about what is happening with a development that we all know that since the lake left Aruba in the years 1985 -1986, the ocean was not only a government but was all governments, which designated this area for a tourist development and focused to come up with a hotel in this area according to the different master plans that were prepared.

In the past, many attempts have been made by various ministries of tourism and economy to attract a project of this magnitude as a catalyst for a jump start to the island’s economy. At the moment there is a project that is going on and unfortunately does not see from the parliament the initiative to call ministers and to call the group and those who are responsible to get an idea of what is happening with the hotel Secrets.

It was understood that some government department would respond to objections raised by two of the project’s neighbors, meaning that the verdict of the judge would be upheld and the Secrets project would be allowed to continue for the time being. These are important issues and unfortunately do not come up in discussions these days.

Secrets Aruba is a project that has been completed and has gone through the entire trajectory where it has fulfilled all the permits and all the requirements that were on the part of the government to be able to execute a project that Aruba itself has been looking for for a long time and now that Aruba is almost achieving for this project to be a reality in Aruba the project poses a threat to the country Aruba. In this case it is a threat of a millionaire claim that may occur due to non-compliance on the part of the State of Aruba. This is not because of the government’s directive, but because two neighbors sought their rights through the law to protect their rights and went to court. The government, in turn, had to comply with this ruling and had already answered these objections of the neighborhood and the developments could continue last week with the works.

However, this does not mean that the obstacles are over, but it is very strange that in the parliament of Aruba, the fraction of AVP, MEP, RAIZ and action 21 do not have any questions about this and do not make any expression either. Former minister Otmar Oduber laments that the parliament itself is not active and does not show its support for such a large project for the people of San Nicolas. This is a project that after the lake has left Aruba will become the most important project for the development of the entire neighborhood and the entire community of San Nicolas in terms of employment and economic development in its entirety.

When Hotel Secrets is due to open its doors, the impact will be so great that several businesses in San Nicolas will start to open, but also the shops that are still struggling in San Nicolas may find relief, where practically with the presence of Hotel Secrets in San Nicolas would be a solution to create a flourishing economy for the whole of Aruba, but unfortunately we do not see the parliament looking for a way to do something to make this project possible.

It’s no secret that every campaign, politicians head to San Nicolas, Aruba’s largest and most voted neighborhood. At the time of arrival in San Nicolas all the governments promised development, but today that there is a development does not see any action of parliament, with the exception of parliamentarian Alvin Molina who asked some questions.

Former Minister Otmar Oduber appeals not only to the government to support this project in a proactive way, but also to the Parliament which can be much more active in supporting it. The government should be careful to initiate a dialogue with these two neighbors, seeking an alternative to their inquiries and seeking a solution to them. In this case the general welfare is the one that should prevail for the people of San Nicolas in the first place, but certainly also for the entire Aruba.
