The month of April is known as the camping season. The health department asks our community to take care of our health during the camp. Excessive sun exposure, excessive alcohol consumption, and unprotected sex are some of the things we should avoid to avoid negative health consequences.
Strong sun
Aruba’s climate is extremely hot. For protection against strong sunlight, use sunblock that contains a minimum of 30 SPF with UVA and UVB protection. Apply and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. For children it is recommended to reapply every half hour. Create shade by protecting yourself with a chest or shade. Protect your skin by wearing bright colors. Wear glasses to protect your eyes from strong ultraviolet rays.
Excessive use of alcohol
We are aware that during the camp many people abuse alcohol and for this reason the Department of Public Health wishes to raise awareness of Aruba’s community about the dangers of alcohol consumption. Camping is fun and you often hang out with family and friends in a setting that includes drinking. However, it is important to remember that excessive drinking can lead to serious consequences, including motor vehicle accidents, injury to yourself or others, and even death. Alcohol affects your coordination, cognition, balance, and ability to think rationally and clearly. Alcohol makes you more impulsive and makes you want to push boundaries. Remember that alcohol is also a risk factor for chronic disease.
Relax, enjoy yourself but don’t overdo it! How can you be at peace?
Drink a glass of water for every alcoholic drink you drink. If you drink alcohol, make sure you snack regularly or eat at least every hour. Don’t drink too much. Give a maximum of one glass of alcoholic beverage per hour. If you have not taken the necessary precautions and feel unable to drive, ask someone who is not under the influence to drive you or take you home.
What can you do to enjoy a healthy camp?

Drink enough water to stay hydrated
