Today, on the first Friday of September, in parliament, the budget has a surplus that is needed to improve the public finances of Aruba. Since that the Minister Xiomara Maduro assumed the responsibility as Minister of Finance together with her team of professionals, they have been working to repair and heal the public finances of our country.
The finance team has been working in continuous consultation with the international institutes such as IMF and World Bank for advice and guidance to improve our national budget, as has been done with the financial supervision of CAFT and the ‘Landspakket’ agreements.
It was hard work and dedication to get better results each time. In addition, new products have been developed along with the budget to provide more information and transparency to the Parliament of Aruba and the community. The quarterly ‘Uitvoeringsrapportages’ URK, the Start of the Year Note and the Budget Change were presented, thus providing further explanation of how public funds are used. The Minister of Finance and her team of experts have been working to reduce the debt of the country of Aruba, increase our income and reach the surplus that is necessary to improve our public finances, unlike the previous cabinets that took a policy with fictitious budgets and very large deficits that plunged our country into astronomical debts with all the consequences that this has brought.
In 2020 the government could have presented a budget with a surplus, but the pandemic caused a situation completely different. Despite of that the Government continued with the hard work and in less than three years it is possible to present a surplus budget in 2023. The procedure was completed and today it was decided that the 2024 budget can be signed.
This Budget will be delivered before September 2023 to the Parliament of Aruba, in the beginning of the New Yearly Parliament Cycle, to be discussed. The Minister of Finance indicates that this is the second budget of our country that is delivered on time in accordance with the law, and the second budget that contains a surplus. Budget 2024 is accompanied by a new product, the Notes of Budget 2024. This gives an overview of the contents of the 2024 Budget and helps the Parliament to understand better how the budget fits together. As well this is more financial transparency for the people. The budget will be handed over to the President of the Parliament tomorrow and then the Finance Minister will hold a press conference to provide more information and explanation on Budget 2024.
The Minister thanked his fellow ministers and the team of experts of the Government of Aruba who worked tirelessly and demonstrated every day their love for Aruba. Minister Xiomara Maduro believes in Aruba, and in the potential of our people and always thanks God for the wisdom, strength and patience of all those who help to take Aruba forward.
