The Bonaire public body is aware of the current situation at the slave houses along Pekelmeer. The slave houses have an important historical value for Bonaire. It is very important that they be protected and restored as soon as possible.
The R&D department investigated the situation on site and immediately took the necessary steps. The reason for this is that the houses were built around 1850 from cut coral limestone without a solid foundation. To prevent further damage, it is important to provide a solid foundation.
In view of the location of the slave houses on the coast, the necessary authorization must be requested by the R & D department for the restoration work. The permit is required on the basis of the Nature Management Regulation (Article 28 of the Island Decree on Underwater Parks and Article 8 of the Island Decree on Nature Management) to ensure the protection of nature. In order to prevent further damage, the Nature Conservancy and Stinapa are processing this request as a matter of urgency. Once this authorisation has been granted, the repair work can be carried out.
