The Kim Jong-un regime incorporated the status of nuclear power into the Constitution of North Korea, as confirmed on Thursday by the official news agency KCNA. The policy of building a nuclear force in the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) has been permanently established as a basic law of the state, which no one can circumvent by any means,” the North Korean dictator said during a meeting of the country’s People’s Assembly held on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to KKCNA.
Addressing Parliament, he also said that it is a “very important” measure to “accelerate the modernization of nuclear weapons in order to maintain the definitive advantage of the strategic deterrence capacity.” A year ago, the People’s Assembly passed a law declaring North Korea a nuclear power and Kim said that this status was “irreversible.” The legislation also allowed the preventive use of this type of weapon.
Now, this legislative body controlled by the North Korean power leadership goes a step further and inscribes this status in the Constitution itself. It is a historic event that provides powerful political support to significantly strengthen national defense capabilities,” Kim Jong-un concluded. This announcement came just a day after the Pyongyang dictatorship again threatened a nuclear war on the Korean peninsula. The “continuous hysteria of the United States and its allies in terms of nuclear confrontation (…) are leading the Korean peninsula to a military situation on the verge of nuclear war,” warned Pyongyang ambassador Kim Song, in a speech to the UN General Assembly. The North Korean regime has carried out a record number of weapons tests this year, during which speculation has grown about a nuclear test that would be the seventh in its history and the first since 2017. Tension also increased with South Korea and the United States, which have intensified joint military exercises in the area.
Diplomacy is stagnant and the possibility of negotiating a denuclearization of the peninsula seems negligible. The armies of South Korea and the United States began this week naval maneuvers that include live fire and anti-submarine exercises in the Sea of Japan (called the East Sea in the two Koreas) in response to Pyongyang’s latest actions. Two maritime patrol planes and nine ships participated in the drill, which lasted until Wednesday, including two submarines and destroyers of the South Korean Naval Forces.
On the American side, the destroyer USS Shoup equipped with Aegis system and the cruiser USS Robert Smalls took part. The North Korean regime has carried out a record number of weapons tests this year.
The exercises have been designed “to strengthen the interoperability capabilities of the allies at a time when nuclear and missile threats are intensifying, and which includes the recent launch of what North Korea says is a space launch vehicle and the presentation of a new submarine,” according to the text issued by Washington and Seoul.
A couple of weeks ago Pyongyang launched a new “submarine for tactical nuclear attacks”, its first submersible with the capacity to launch ballistic missiles (SSB) and designed to have operational capacity. In turn, the Kim Jong-un regime launched a space rocket on August 24 with which it tried to put its first military reconnaissance satellite into orbit, without success.
This was the second failed attempt on this ground harvested this year by North Korea, which announced that it would try again to place a spy satellite in Earth’s orbit in October.
