The Executive Council has made a decision to generally allow the import of goods from Venezuela without restrictions. Deputy Jolinda Craane, responsible for economic affairs, is very happy with this. “The reopening of the maritime borders with Venezuela was an important step for the residents and businesses of Bonaire. This expansion offers more supply at lower prices, more support in the purchasing power of consumers and more opportunities for local retailers and importers.”

A number of exceptions remain applicable to prevent public health and natural risks. Live animals, meat, edible offal, milk, eggs and other animal products are still not allowed to be imported due to the risk of bird flu and its effects on our health. Fish, crustaceans (such as lobster, Shells and snails), molluscs (such as cuttlefish) and other invertebrates cannot be imported unless it is done by a company based in Bonaire, the boat is registered in Bonaire and in possession of the correct permits. This guarantees the competitive position for local fishermen. Due to the lobster mating season, fresh lobster may not be brought to Bonaire under any circumstances between May 1 and October 31.

Living plants and flowers are also not allowed, partly due to nature and veterinary risks. This does not apply to dried herbs, vegetable oils and sugar. There is still an import ban on flour, seeds, plants for use in companies and medicines, hay, straw and vegetable goods, for example for craft use, due to the presence of foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks in many farms. However, processed and packaged banana leaves for “ayacas” are welcome. Animal products, such as wool and unprocessed hides, are not permitted. Just like single-use plastic, gold, copper, nickel and some plants and animals protected by CITES. Weapons, ammunition, medicines and narcotics according to the Opium Act of 1960 BES and fuel for import or sale are also not permitted.

If food or edibles are imported, it must meet safety requirements. Other products must be new and unused and ownership must be proven when importing vehicles and registered goods, such as boats. Do not hesitate to contact Customs Caribbean Netherlands for any questions or doubts. “The Executive Council hopes to soon announce the establishment of a fruit and vegetable market to meet the wishes of the residents,” said Deputy Craane.
