Last 15 september 2023 was the international day of democracy. This year’s focus was the youth and the role that they play in the maintenance of the democratic rights of our country and world. The role, purpose and importance that not only the youth but also adults play in this area is big but not impossible to exercise.
Before we go into details of the role that we as co citizens and citizens play in the democracy of our country we must understand “what” democracy is. democracy is a governmental system where the power of choice an expression under the country’s citizens falls or the people which they chose to represent them in the national governmental organ and internationally, which in our case is where we can choose freely and anonymously whom will represent us every 4 years, which reinforces the reasoning behind why we should vote when given the chance and why it’s so important for our present and future. Democracy which literally means “the power lies in the hands of the country” supports the fundamental rights and laws such as: article 18 to 21 of the national declaration of human rights and electoral laws. Each one of us, it doesn’t matter if we are children, youth, young adults or adults, we all have the right to speak up and choose what is important and necessary for us for our country and our personal life.
Democracy and the international day of democracy lets us as youths and adults reflect on the state of the democracy in our country and how we can help reinforce and maintain this state. What?, for what?, whom?, and at what time? are all the questions we have to ask ourselves when we want to actively participate and speak about things that are going well or bad in the area of democracy of our country. To be critical but open to transitional changes for a sustainable future is important, but more important yet is our fundamental right to do so. don’t be afraid and don’t be quiet are the principal pillars to support our democracy.
The role of us as youths and adults and each one of our co citizens is to maintain our opinions and thoughts alive in the principal organ of our country and in our society. We must stay firm in our beliefs and express this with respect and constructive value for the improvement of our country. So that this can keep maintaining not only our democracy but the rights that we have. We must start as youths, young adults and adults fortify our norms and values in our country when standing up for our democracy which are to respect, to tolerate, to negotiate and mutual solidarity each one of them must work together so that our democracy can keep fortifying.
Lastly, what is the role that you are playing in our society in the democratic area of our country? How are you ready to maintain this? and what are you ready to do and give to do a positive, constructive and sustainable change in our country?. Ask yourself these questions and the answers of what your fundamental role will be and are for our democracy will start to form. Maintaining, supporting and respecting the democratic rights of our country and future starts now and with each one of us.
