The purpose of this meeting was to raise awareness among all stakeholders regarding the consequences of – and recognition of-the signals of human trafficking and human smuggling

The minister of Justice, minister Hato, and the Bureau for the Prevention of Human Trafficking and Human Smuggling i.O. of the Ministry of justice worked together with chain partners to organize this educational afternoon. The venue for this meeting was Caribbean Cinemas in Sambil, where the participants gathered to jointly watch the film “The Sound of Freedom”.

This activity marks one of the many initiatives launched by Justice Minister Hato to promote closer cooperation on his priority theme, Human Trafficking and human smuggling. By bringing together experts, policymakers and other stakeholders in an informal and inspiring setting, the Justice Department hopes to send a powerful signal that the fight against this despicable crime requires a concerted effort. In line with the recommendations of the U.S. Department of state’S trafficking in Persons (TIP) report, the Department of justice emphasizes the serious approach to human trafficking and human smuggling. These efforts are testament to our determination to take the right steps towards creating effective awareness and fighting human trafficking and smuggling more effectively.

During the meeting, key insights were shared by two Operation Underground Railroad (O. U. R.) delegation members who flew over from the United States specifically for this event. The delegation members mentioned the challenges but also cooperation opportunities in the field of human trafficking and human smuggling during this event. Participants were encouraged to share their expertise and experiences, in the hope that this will contribute to a more coordinated and effective approach to these issues. The public prosecutor’s office (OM) was also present to provide information and answer questions regarding the prosecution of human trafficking and human smuggling. This highlights the close cooperation between the Ministry of justice and the public prosecutor’s office in order to tackle this crime more effectively and bring perpetrators to justice.

The Ministry of justice thanks all chain partners for their involvement and commitment to this important topic. Together we strive for a human trafficking – and human smuggling-free Curaçao.
