This weekend the Aruban People’s Party AVP held its first Common Good in the Neighborhood action where the beneficiary neighborhood was Dakota. A group of between 50 and 60 volunteers consisting of party leadership, candidates, members and activists scoured the streets of Dakota to collect the accumulated debris that was affecting the neighborhood.
The leader of the AVP, mr. Mike Eman explained that the project consists of two phases. The promoter visited the inhabitants for several afternoons leaving behind garbage bags and information to make use of the bag and leave the garbage outside on the date of collection.
The second part is the one that took place on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 September, where about 20 pickups were picked up to be taken and dumped in the trash cans that the company had made available as support for the community action, something Eman is very happy about because the community needed to learn.
You can see that the truth is that closing the dump was always a problem, but just closing the dump is not enough for an alternative that is affordable, leading to accumulation of waste in households because they do not have the funds to pay. It may be for commerce yes, but for a family no, as the political leader explained, adding that based on what they have seen, it can be said that there is a national crisis of accumulation of waste in the villages because dumps are closed and there is no affordable alternative for the people.
What makes AVP happy is that since the announcement of this program, Minister Ursell Arends has woken up from his sleep and realized that he has caused a disaster for hygiene and the environment. Now that the government is making bakeries available in neighborhoods, we applaud the announcement of the AVP. Hopefully, they will be consistent, as Aman pointed out. While Common Good in your Neighborhood has cleaned up this time, it will cover other needs of the community at other times.
“This is what the government did; it closed the dump of Parkietenbos and opened the dump of Aruba”, declared candidate and former parliamentarian Marlon Sneek. She explained that it was an ad hoc decision and therefore felt the need to go out and help people. After all the increases in basic necessities, people don’t understand where the government thinks it can get the money to pay for the waste disposal.
Wendrick Cecilia and Clifford Heyliger also took part in the weekend’s action and described it as one that gives hope and inspires our community that there is an alternative route and that there is a vision for governance in the AVP party with the common good. To govern means to serve the needs of the people. Today we have an MEP-RAIZ government that doesn’t know how to do that, as the young politician Cicilia pointed out. Clifford Heiliger, for his part, indicated that the AVP would continue to show its support if possible. Other party members who could be seen active in this BON COMUN action in the neighborhood are Arthur Dowers, Benny Sevinger, Mervin Wyatt Ras, Conny Conner and Junior Croes.
Mike Eman thanked all the baking companies and volunteers who made the action possible and continues Sunday in his second place that puts the bakes in front of the Dakota Barrio and Sports Center to continue covering the panoramic area that extends to Tarabana. The fact that party leader Mike Eman was greeted with a huge outpouring of support in the Dakotas clearly demonstrates the desire of the people for a leadership that sees and feels the needs of the people.
