Cargo flights between Aruba and Venezuela through Curaçao are allowed

Indirect cargo flights between Aruba and Venezuela will be allowed again under certain conditions. Under the new policy, local companies will be allowed to operate flights via Corso, while similar flights may also be operated by Venezuelan airlines.

The current ban remains in place for direct flights, including passenger, cargo and combined flights between Aruba and Venezuela. Passenger flights with stopovers to a third country are also prohibited.

The Ministry of Transport has officially announced the new policy for Aruba’s air traffic. The “Interim Air Traffic Management” (Interim Beleid Luchtvaart) was introduced as a reaction to recent developments in the aviation field. This policy addresses the challenges that arose after Curaçao opened its border with Venezuela while Aruba’s remains closed.

The specific conditions that apply to indirect cargo flights are set out in the bilateral aviation agreement. This temporary measure establishes some rules that will guide commercial flights until the border with Venezuela is reopened.

These flights from Venezuela to Aruba (or vice versa) with a stopover in a third country will be limited to a frequency of three times a week and will have to meet conditions set by the Aruban or international authorities.

The interim rule requires that commercial permits be granted mutually, in accordance with the principle of reciprocity. As indicated, local companies will be allowed to conduct the flights via Corso, while similar flights may also be operated by Venezuelan airlines.

The Ministry of Transport will implement this policy and in accordance with the decision of the Council of Ministers of Aruba it will remain in force until the border with Venezuela is reopened. This policy was developed in consultation with Immigration Aruba, Customs Aruba, Directie Scheepvaart, Directie Luchtvaart, Directie Buitenlandse Betrekkingen and the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
