The municipality of Rotterdam has tightened regulations on the sale of alcohol, but the festival’s organization has taken it even further by banning what they categorize as “vulgar dancing.”
On its website, the Summer Carnival organization states that dancing can be considered “provocative and/or vulgar.” In particular, the dance style known as bubbling has been prohibited, as it involves imitating sexual movements in public. These regulations aim to maintain a family-friendly environment for the annual event.
Eva van der Vegt, the director of Rotterdam Unlimited Summer Carnival, explains that these changes were made in response to complaints about offensive behavior in previous years. The organization wants to prevent any incidents from occurring at this year’s carnival. Van der Vegt emphasizes that these rules are a call for participants to exhibit good behavior and decency. However, she acknowledges that enforcing these rules can be challenging.
The organization plans to evaluate each case individually and engage in discussions with multiple parties involved. If someone repeatedly violates the regulations, they may face exclusion from the event for one or several years. The ultimate goal is to ensure that the Rotterdam Summer Carnival remains a fun and inclusive celebration for people of all ages.
