May 2023 in comparison to 2019 and 2022
In May 2023, our destination received a total of 94,385 stay-over visitors. Comparing May 2023 to May 2019 – which was the last normal year of tourism, Aruba recovered 107% of the locations received in May 2019, indicating a growth of 7%.
A comparison between May 2023 and May 2022 would see a 103% recovery indicating a 3% growth.
Markets and Categories of Accommodation
In May 2023, 83.3% of the total number of “stayover” visitors to Aruba were from North America, 5.2% were from Europe, 8.8% were from Latin America and 2.8% were from other parts of the world. Looking at accommodation categories, in May 2023 27.8% of visitors stayed in European Plan hotels, 19.8% stayed in All-Inclusive hotels, 26.7% stayed in Timeshare and 25.7% stayed in other types of accommodation, also known as vacation rentals.

It is important to mention that the A.T.A. has access to a platform where you can see the number of houses, Apartments and villas used as vacation rentals as well as the average price per night, the occupancy and a calculation of the revenue they generate.
Comparing May 2023 to May 2022, the average price of these accommodations increased by 21.1%, from an average price of $213 per night in May 2022 to an average price of $258 in May 2023. Comparing May 2023 to May 2019, the average price of these accommodations increased by 66.5%, from an average price of $155 per night in May 2019 to an average price of $258 in May 2023.
Compared to May 2023 and May 2022, the average occupancy of these accommodations decreased. by 3.1 percentage points, from an average of 52.6% in May 2022 to an average of 49.5% in May 2023.
Comparing May 2023 to May 2019, the average occupancy of these accommodations increased by 5.9 percentage points, from an average of 43.6% in May 2019 to an average of 49.5% in May 2023.
In terms of revenue, comparing May 2023 to May 2022 shows that the category generated revenue growth of 34.0%. Comparing May 2023 to May 2019, the category generated revenue growth of 219.1%.

In the first five months of 2023, Aruba received a total of 510,033 “stayover” visitors, which is a growth of 7.0%, compared to the first 5 months of 2019, receiving 476,679 “stayover” visitors. Comparing the first five months of 2023 to the first five months of 2022, we can see a growth of 19.5%, going from 426,799 stayover visitors to 510,033 stayover visitors.
Aruba remains one of the top destinations to recover from the pandemic but it must be noted that Aruba has strategically taken the right steps to optimally and successfully benefit from the travel hunger during and after the pandemic, a temporary phenomenon. Tourism remains strong for Aruba, and will return to more normal trends after seeing the post-pandemic effect.
